Remote Viewing and Dreams: What Is Claimed, and What Was Studied
Dreamed a place you had never seen, then found it? Remote viewing was studied for decades with public money. Here is what the record actually says.

They had been dreaming the same place for five or six years, an outdoor shopping area at night, bright lights, staircases, palm trees, neon, people everywhere. Then their family drove past a real one on the way to Disneyland and they got this insane feeling of familiarity. They looked it up. It had a name, Anaheim GardenWalk, and scrolling through photographs of it their stomach dropped. Same layout. Same atmosphere. They finished the post with the sentence people usually finish these with: I genuinely can't stop thinking about it.
Another one, on TikTok, from someone standing in Italy: "I wouldnt shut up about this dream to my friends and now 2 days later I am standing in it." Eight thousand people liked that.
So, if that has happened to you, the first thing worth saying is that a great many people are describing exactly the same thing, and the second thing is that the question you are probably asking has a real answer. You want to know whether anyone ever seriously looked into this. They did. For more than twenty years, with public money, and the paperwork is online.

01The word for what you are describing
Remote viewing is a specific claim, and it is worth separating from its neighbors before anything else, because they get blended constantly.
The claim is that a person can describe a place, an object or a scene that they have no ordinary way of knowing about. The place is distant, or hidden, or behind a wall. The claim is about information arriving. It is not a claim that the person went anywhere. That distinction is what separates it from the out-of-body family of experiences, where the whole felt quality of the thing is travel: leaving, floating, looking back at the bed. In remote viewing, as it was studied, the viewer sits in a room, stays exactly where they are, and talks or draws.
When it turns up in dreams, the same shape holds. You did not visit the shopping center in your sleep. You woke with a picture of it. What you are wondering is where the picture came from.
02Yes, this was studied, with public money, for more than twenty years
You have probably already met both of the simplified versions of this, the one that says it was proven and the one that says it was nonsense. So, here is the history plainly.
The CIA has published its own short account of it. According to that account, the earliest record its historians have found is a 1948 memorandum about whether hypnotized people might be used for long-distance communication, and the agency began its own research in the summer of 1972, working with outside scientists to investigate whether certain people could describe locations and objects around the world without being there. That research ended in 1977, when the program moved to the Defense Intelligence Agency.
Much of the work the evaluators later reviewed is described in the evaluation as government-sponsored research at Stanford Research Institute and, in the later years, at Science Applications International Corporation. In October 1974, two of the Stanford Research Institute scientists, Russell Targ and Harold Puthoff, published their results in Nature under the title Information transmission under conditions of sensory shielding, arguing that the abilities they were seeing could be studied under laboratory conditions. Four years later, in the same journal, David Marks and Richard Kammann of the University of Otago published a reply saying they had carried out duplicate experiments and their results did not verify the conclusions. That exchange set the pattern for everything that followed.
Inside the agency the mood was not triumphant either. In the winter of 1977 a CIA officer, Kenneth Kress, wrote a review of the whole business for the agency's in-house journal Studies in Intelligence, which carries a standing note that its articles reflect their authors' views rather than official positions. His summary of where things stood was blunt: the research had demonstrated abilities but had "not explained them nor made them reproducible," and the reproducibility, he wrote, remained poor.
The defense program that inherited the work is the one people have heard of. Star Gate. It pursued operations, using viewers against foreign targets, alongside laboratory research meant to improve the technique. It ran into the mid-1990s. Then it came back to the CIA, and the CIA agreed to look at it again only on the condition that somebody independent evaluated it first.

03What a remote viewing trial actually looked like
Before the verdict, the method, because the method is the part you can actually use.
The evaluation's own background chapter describes the classic design. A person called a beacon or sender travels to one of a set of locations. The viewer, sitting elsewhere, describes where the beacon is, usually in words and drawings. Then a judge takes that description and rank orders the set of locations against it. If the viewer's description matches the actual location better than the others, that counts as a hit. If hits happen more often than chance across many trials, something is happening that needs explaining. Later versions swapped real locations for a pool of photographs, often National Geographic images, and ran the whole thing double blind.
Notice what that design is protecting against. The viewer cannot know the target, so they cannot describe it from knowledge. The judge does not know the target either, so the judge cannot flatter the match. The description exists in writing before anyone knows what it will be compared with. And the alternatives are real: the description has to beat several decoys, not just resemble one thing after the fact.
None of that is a trick to catch anybody out. It is the only way anyone knows to make a resemblance countable.

That table is not a scorecard for your experience. It is the reason the argument was ever an argument, and the reason two very smart people could read the same files and disagree.
04What the 1995 evaluation actually said
The evaluation was carried out by the American Institutes for Research, a nonprofit research organization, and delivered on September 29, 1995. It runs to more than two hundred pages under the title An Evaluation of Remote Viewing: Research and Applications, by Michael D. Mumford, Andrew M. Rose and David A. Goslin. It sits in the declassified Star Gate collection and anyone can read it.
For the research half, two reviewers were brought in and deliberately chosen to disagree. Jessica Utts, a professor of statistics at the University of California, Davis. Ray Hyman, a professor of psychology at the University of Oregon. They reviewed roughly eighty publications between them, wrote separately, exchanged reviews, and then tried to reach a consensus.
Utts's conclusion was not hedged. She wrote that using the standards applied to any other area of science, "it is concluded that psychic functioning has been well established," that the statistical results were far beyond chance, and that effects of similar size had turned up in laboratories elsewhere. She put the magnitude somewhere between what social scientists call a small and a medium effect, and recommended that future work stop trying to prove the thing exists and start trying to understand how it works.
Hyman did not answer that with a dismissal, which is the half of the story that rarely travels. He wrote that he and Utts agreed on a good deal, including that the later experiments had avoided the flaws of the early Stanford work, and, in his own words, that the effect sizes "are too large and consistent to be dismissed as statistical flukes." His disagreement was about what follows from that. He did not accept that the departures from chance established anomalous cognition, he did not accept that methodological explanations had been eliminated, and he pointed out that the same viewers, the same judge and the same target pictures ran through much of the work, which makes their separate contributions impossible to untangle. His summary of the two readings is the honest line: where parapsychologists see consistency, he saw inconsistency.
They agreed on the next step, which is quietly the most useful thing in the whole document. Both wanted the existing transcripts rejudged by independent judges who were blind to the targets, and then, if that held up, replication in other laboratories with a new target set.
The evaluation's own bullet points split the difference in a way neither camp likes to quote in full. A statistically significant laboratory effect had been shown, in the sense that hits occurred more often than chance. It was unclear whether that could be attributed to the viewers rather than to the judges or the targets or the method. And the experiments had not identified the origins or nature of the phenomenon, "if, indeed, it exists at all."
The operational half was not close. Users of the intelligence reports said that although some broad background detail was accurate, the reports failed to produce the concrete specifics that intelligence work needs, and that what came back was inconsistent, inaccurate on specifics, and required substantial subjective interpretation. The report's conclusion was one sentence: continued use of remote viewing in intelligence gathering operations is not warranted.
The CIA's own public summary of that outcome, written years later, is worth having beside it, because it is neither of the two versions that circulate. Its historians describe the finding as enough accurate experiences "to defy randomness," but a phenomenon "too unreliable, inconsistent, and sporadic to be useful for intelligence purposes." That is not proof, and it is not a debunking. It is a program being closed because it could not deliver, by people who did not claim to have explained what they were closing.
It was not the first such conclusion, either. A National Research Council panel had already reviewed a wide range of performance-enhancement techniques in the 1980s and published its report, Enhancing Human Performance, in 1988. As the 1995 evaluation's own history section records, that panel found some support for a few techniques and little or no support for others, remote viewing among them.
05And the dreams, specifically
None of the above is about sleep, which is presumably why you are here. So, here is the dream file, such as it is.
The later laboratory program listed ten experiments, and two of them used lucid dreamers. In the table Utts reproduces in her review, the baseline dream study ran 24 trials with an effect size of .088 and a p-value of 0.333, which is a null result, and the pilot ran 21 trials with an effect size of .368 and a p-value of 0.046, which lands just under the conventional threshold. Twenty-one trials is a very small study. Both numbers are worth stating exactly, because rounding either one turns a modest experiment into a headline.
The dream work with real history behind it happened earlier and somewhere else. Through the 1960s and into the 1970s, a laboratory at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn ran a long series of experiments in which a sender concentrated on a picture while a sleeper was monitored and woken during REM sleep to report their dream. The team's own record is not a run of unbroken successes. In 1972, several of the Maimonides researchers, working with the dream researcher D. Foulkes, published a paper in Perceptual and Motor Skills whose title says how it went: Long-distance, "sensory-bombardment" ESP in dreams: a failure to replicate.
The best current summary of that whole literature comes from researchers who work in the field rather than against it. In 2017, Lance Storm, Simon Sherwood, Christopher Roe, Patrizio Tressoldi, Adam Rock and Lorenzo Di Risio published a meta-analysis of dream ESP studies covering 1966 to 2016 in the International Journal of Dream Research. They gathered 50 studies, 14 from the Maimonides laboratory and 36 from independent laboratories, and reported an overall effect above chance, with the Maimonides studies averaging a larger effect than the independent ones, though that difference was not statistically significant. They also reported something that cuts against their own case and printed it anyway: across the 51 years, the effect size declined. Their stated conclusion is careful, and it is theirs, not ours: the paradigm is worth continuing to investigate, and the designs need improving.
That is the whole honest position, from the people most sympathetic to it. Not proven. Not nothing. Still open, and getting smaller.

06Why a sleeping brain can build a place you have never been
There is a separate question sitting underneath yours, and it is answerable without settling anything about remote viewing at all. Where do dream places come from?
They come from you, in pieces. In 2003, Magdalena Fosse, Roar Fosse, Allan Hobson and Robert Stickgold had 29 people keep a log of their daytime life and their dreams for two weeks and score one against the other. Across 299 reports, 65 percent reflected some aspect of recent waking life, while replay of an actual episode appeared in no more than 1 to 2 percent. So, dreaming draws on your life almost constantly, and almost never plays it back. It takes fragments and builds something that was never there: a staircase from one place, light from another, a feeling from a third, assembled into a location with no address.
A brain that does that for a living will produce plenty of places you have never been. Some of them, over years, will resemble somewhere real, because real places are also made of staircases and light.
The second half of it is that we are not reliable narrators of where our own images came from. Johnson, Hashtroudi and Lindsay's review in Psychological Bulletin describes this as source monitoring: the ongoing job of tagging a memory with its origin, whether you saw it, imagined it, read it or dreamed it. They catalogue the ways that job goes wrong, including misattributed familiarity and what they call the incorporation of fiction into fact. Source tags are the flimsiest part of a memory and the first thing to fall off. A place glimpsed for two seconds in a commercial ten years ago can survive as an image long after the label saying where it came from has gone.
Two people in that Reddit thread got there themselves, gently, without anyone lecturing. One wondered whether the poster had seen it in a movie or a commercial long ago and their brain had quietly brought it back up. Another said they had the same thing with a gym, and then realized they had been there once as a kid. That is a person solving their own case, and the relief in it is real. 07The line the friendliest expert in the file drew herself
Here is the part worth reading twice, because of who wrote it.
Jessica Utts is the reviewer who concluded that psychic functioning had been established. In the same review, arguing that laboratory evidence deserves more weight than anecdotes, she explains why a spontaneous experience is a different kind of thing from a trial. In an experiment the response is defined in advance. In life it is not. And then she gives the example herself: "if a few people each night happen to dream of plane crashes, then some will obviously do so on the night before a major plane crash. Those individuals may interpret the coincidental timing as meaningful."
That is not a stranger dismissing your dream. That is the most sympathetic reader in the entire record saying that the thing which happened to you, however striking, is not the thing the experiments were measuring. She was not being unkind about it, and nobody else needs to be either. 08What would actually count, and how to run it on yourself
None of this leaves you with nothing to do. It leaves you with a method, which is better than a verdict, and the method is borrowed directly from the trials described above.
Write it down before you look anything up. This is the whole ballgame. Once you have seen the photograph, your memory of the dream will quietly reshape itself toward it, and you will never get the original back. Date and time it. Take a photograph of the page if you want a timestamp you did not make yourself.
Be specific, and be specific about the things that can be wrong. Not "an old European street" but the number of stories, the color of the shutters, whether the road curved left or right, what was written on the sign, what the ground was made of. A vague description fits everywhere, which is exactly why the reports in the intelligence program were judged inconsistent on specifics. Specificity is what makes a match mean something.
Let someone else hold the answer. If you want to test it prospectively rather than wait for life to hand you a coincidence, this is the piece that turns a story into a trial. Ask a friend to pick a location from a set of five, seal it, and tell you nothing. Write your description. Then let a third person, who does not know which one was chosen, rank all five against what you wrote.
Keep the misses. Every trial in every study counted the ones that went nowhere, and a notebook that only records hits cannot tell you anything, however thick it gets. A single striking match is not evidence on its own, which is exactly why both reviewers, for everything they disagreed about, both asked for independent judging and then replication.
And do not run this to prove yourself wrong. That is not the point, and it is not a healthy way to hold something that mattered to you. The point is that if you write first and specify hard, then whatever happens next is genuinely yours: a real record rather than a memory that has been quietly editing itself since the moment you saw the photograph.
09What people who practice it say
There is a large community that practices remote viewing deliberately, some of it built on methods popularized after the government work became public, and it deserves describing accurately rather than sideways.
Practitioners generally treat it as a trainable skill rather than a fixed talent, and they treat the misses as part of learning rather than as evidence against the thing. One creator with nearly six thousand likes on the post puts the standard encouragement plainly: "Even if you don't get them right, keep practicing. You'll naturally get better at Remote Viewing." Held as a description of a craft, that is a perfectly coherent way to approach it, and it is how people learn most difficult things.
It is worth being clear that this is a different question from the one the evaluations were asking. "Am I improving at this practice" and "does a single hit demonstrate information transfer" are not the same question, and an answer to one is not an answer to the other. The research record cannot tell you whether your practice is meaningful to you. It can only tell you what happened when people tried to make hits countable.
Alongside the practice sits a set of spiritual readings, and they are held as belief rather than established as fact. In modern spiritual and New Age circles a dream of an unknown location may be read as soul travel, as a message from guides, as an echo of a past life, or as a connection to someone at a distance. A place that feels safe and bright is often read as reassurance, and a place that feels urgent or dark as a warning. Those are interpretations offered within a tradition rather than findings, and they can sit beside the research record without either one having to defeat the other. The one caution worth stating from either direction is that a dream is not a basis for a decision about your safety, your health, your money or another person. 10When the dream itself is the thing to look after
Most people who recognize a place from a dream are fascinated rather than frightened, and the fascination is the whole of it. Occasionally it goes somewhere else.
If a dream about a place has you checking maps compulsively, losing sleep, feeling unable to let it go, or convinced you have to act on it, that is worth talking to somebody about, and the conversation is about the distress rather than about whether the dream was real. The same is true if the dreams are frightening, keep repeating, or are wrecking your nights. A repeated dream that carries dread is a reason to get support for the dread. Nobody needs to settle a question about parapsychology first.
And if the dream simply stayed with you and you want to think about what it meant to you, that is available too, and it costs nothing to hold both. A dream can be personally important and still not be a measurement of anything outside your own head.

Can you remote view in a dream?
The claim exists, and it was tested in a small way. Two of the ten experiments in the later government-funded laboratory program used lucid dreamers, running 21 and 24 trials, with one result at chance and one just under the usual significance threshold. Separately, dream ESP experiments have run in laboratories since the 1960s, and a 2017 meta-analysis of 50 of them reported an above-chance overall effect alongside an effect size that shrank over the decades. No reliable, repeatable ability has been established.
Did the CIA prove remote viewing was real?
No, and it did not conclude the opposite either. The 1995 independent evaluation found a statistically significant laboratory effect in the sense that hits happened more often than chance, could not attribute that effect unambiguously to the viewers rather than the method, and concluded that continued operational use was not warranted. The CIA's own summary describes the phenomenon as too unreliable and sporadic to be useful for intelligence work.
Why did I dream about a place I have never been?
Because that is a normal output of dreaming. Research tracking dreams against waking life found that around 65 percent of dream reports reflect some aspect of recent life while only 1 to 2 percent replay an actual episode, so most dream settings are assembled from fragments into somewhere that never existed. Some of those constructions will resemble real places. On top of that, memory is poor at keeping track of where an image came from, so somewhere glimpsed years ago can survive without its label.
Does a later match prove my dream was precognitive?
It cannot on its own, and the reason is about timing rather than about you. A description written after you saw the place has already been reshaped by seeing it, and a resemblance found afterward was never compared against alternatives. That is why the trials fixed the description first, chose the target blind, and had someone who did not know the answer rank it against decoys.
How can I test one of these dreams fairly?
Write the dream down before you look anything up, with as much falsifiable detail as you can manage, and date it. For a prospective test, have someone else select a target from a set of options without telling you, write your description, then let a third person who does not know the answer rank all the options against what you wrote. Keep every attempt, including the ones that go nowhere.
